Acoustic Suspension vs. Ported Speakers

What’s the Difference—and Which Is Better?

If you’ve spent any time shopping for vintage speakers, you’ve probably noticed one obvious difference between cabinets: some have a port or vent, while others are completely sealed.

That difference is much more than cosmetic.

Two of the most common loudspeaker designs are acoustic suspension and ported, also known as bass-reflex. Both can produce outstanding sound, but they go about reproducing bass in very different ways.

And when it comes to vintage audio, understanding that difference can help explain why two speakers with similar-size woofers can sound completely different.


What Is an Acoustic Suspension Speaker?

An acoustic suspension speaker uses a sealed cabinet. There is no port or opening allowing the rear energy of the woofer to escape.

Instead, the trapped air inside the cabinet acts much like a spring. As the woofer moves inward, it compresses the air; as it moves outward, the air helps pull it back toward its resting position. This air spring helps control the movement of the woofer.

The concept became especially important in the early days of high-fidelity audio because it allowed designers to achieve surprisingly deep bass from relatively compact cabinets.

The classic sound associated with a well-designed acoustic suspension speaker is often described as:

Tight. Controlled. Smooth. Accurate.

Technically, a sealed system normally has a more gradual low-frequency roll-off—approximately 12 dB per octave—than a typical bass-reflex system below its tuning region. Acoustic suspension systems also tend to exhibit good low-frequency transient behavior.

That doesn't necessarily mean you'll hear more bass. In fact, you may initially think you're hearing less.

What you're often hearing is less emphasis on the bass.


Why Vintage Audiophiles Love Acoustic Suspension

Listen to a good acoustic suspension speaker and the bass can have a wonderfully natural character.

A kick drum sounds like the impact of a drum rather than simply a large low-frequency thump. An acoustic bass can have definition between individual notes. Vocals and the lower midrange can sound clean because the bass isn't overwhelming everything above it.

This is one reason classic acoustic suspension designs developed such devoted followings.

But there is a price for that control:

They generally need more amplifier power.

Sealed acoustic suspension designs tend to be less efficient than comparable ported designs, meaning more amplifier power may be required to achieve the same acoustic output.

This is worth remembering when pairing vintage speakers with vintage receivers.

A 20- or 30-watt receiver may sound fantastic with the right acoustic suspension speaker, but don't assume that a large 10- or 12-inch woofer automatically means the speaker will play loudly with very little power.

Speaker efficiency matters.


What Is a Ported Speaker?

A ported—or bass-reflex—speaker takes a different approach.

Instead of trapping all the woofer's rear energy inside the cabinet, the enclosure contains a carefully designed opening or tube called a port.

That port isn't simply a hole drilled into the cabinet.

The diameter and length of the port, cabinet volume, and characteristics of the woofer are engineered together so that the port contributes acoustic output around a particular low-frequency range.

Near the enclosure's tuning frequency, the port can contribute substantially to the speaker's bass output while reducing woofer cone movement around that frequency.

The result can be:

More bass output with less amplifier power.

That's one reason bass-reflex designs became—and remain—extremely popular.


The Classic Ported Sound

A well-designed ported speaker can deliver bass that feels:

Bigger. Fuller. Punchier. More effortless.

Rock music can have tremendous impact through a good bass-reflex speaker. Bass guitar can fill the room, and kick drums can have impressive weight.

The increased low-frequency efficiency can also make a ported speaker seem more dynamic when paired with a modestly powered receiver.

This is especially attractive with vintage equipment.

If your receiver produces 25 or 35 watts per channel, a reasonably efficient ported speaker may produce considerably more volume than a low-efficiency acoustic suspension model with the same amplifier.

But ported designs have their own compromises.


The Potential Downside of Ports

Ported speakers are heavily dependent upon proper tuning.

The woofer, cabinet volume and port dimensions must work together.

When they don't, bass can become exaggerated or poorly controlled.

That's where descriptions such as:

Boomy. One-note. Loose. Tubby.

can come from.

But there's an important distinction:

Ported speakers aren't inherently boomy.

A properly engineered bass-reflex system can have extremely accurate bass. Modern design methods based on the work of A. N. Thiele and Richard Small made the behavior of vented systems far more predictable, allowing designers to optimize the relationship between driver, enclosure and port.

So simply seeing a port on the back of a speaker doesn't tell you whether the bass will be accurate.

The quality of the design matters far more.


What Happens Below the Port Tuning Frequency?

Here's something many people don't realize.

A ported enclosure provides excellent woofer control around its tuning frequency, but below that frequency the situation changes dramatically.

The port contributes less useful output and the woofer can become increasingly unloaded, allowing cone excursion to increase rapidly.

An acoustic suspension speaker behaves differently.

Its bass output begins falling earlier, but it does so more gradually.

Think of it this way:

Ported: stays stronger longer, then drops rapidly.

Acoustic suspension: begins rolling off sooner, but falls more gradually.

Neither approach automatically wins.

They're simply different engineering solutions.


What About Speaker Placement?

Here's where the difference becomes especially important in a real listening room.

A sealed acoustic suspension speaker is generally forgiving when placed relatively close to a wall because there isn't a port whose output is directly interacting with that boundary.

A rear-ported speaker, however, often deserves more breathing room.

Placing it too close to the wall can reinforce certain bass frequencies and make the speaker sound heavier than intended.

Moving the speaker only 6–12 inches can sometimes make a surprisingly large difference.

That's why speaker placement should always be treated as part of the system rather than an afterthought.

Your room is effectively another component in your stereo.

So Which One Is Better?

This is where audiophiles can argue all night.

The answer is:

Neither.

A great acoustic suspension speaker will outperform a poorly designed ported speaker.

A great ported speaker will outperform a poorly designed acoustic suspension speaker.

The enclosure type tells you how the designer approached the problem, not whether the finished speaker is good.

Still, there are general tendencies.

If your listening priorities lean toward jazz, acoustic music, vocals, classical music and critical listening, you may appreciate the controlled character of a good acoustic suspension design.

If you enjoy classic rock, blues, funk, electronic music or music where bass impact and dynamics are important, a well-designed ported speaker can be incredibly satisfying.

But those aren't rules.

They're starting points.


Don't Forget the Amplifier

Vintage audio enthusiasts should pay particular attention to amplifier matching.

Suppose you have a beautiful 30-watt-per-channel vintage receiver.

Pair it with a speaker rated around 86 dB sensitivity, and you'll need considerably more amplifier power to reach high listening levels than you would with a speaker rated around 92 dB.

That six-decibel difference is enormous in practical terms.

So don't choose a speaker based only on woofer size.

Look at:

Vintage audio is about the system—not individual specifications.


One Important Warning About Vintage Acoustic Suspension Speakers

If you own an older acoustic suspension speaker, the cabinet's seal matters.

These speakers depend upon the trapped air inside the enclosure to help control woofer movement.

If the woofer surround, cabinet gasket, terminal plate or other opening leaks excessively, the system may no longer behave as the designer intended.

That's why replacing deteriorated surrounds or removing woofers from vintage acoustic suspension speakers needs to be done carefully.

Restoring the seal is part of restoring the speakers.

The Bottom Line

Acoustic suspension and bass-reflex speakers represent two different philosophies of loudspeaker design.

Acoustic suspension uses trapped air to control the woofer, generally trading efficiency for controlled, gradually rolling-off bass.

Bass reflex uses a tuned port to contribute additional low-frequency output, generally offering greater efficiency and stronger bass around the tuning region.

Both approaches have produced some truly legendary loudspeakers.

And that's one of the things that makes vintage audio so interesting.

There isn't one formula for great sound.

Sometimes it's a massive woofer in a sealed wooden cabinet powered by a big vintage receiver.

Sometimes it's a carefully tuned ported enclosure being driven by only 30 watts.

The specifications can tell you how the speaker was designed.

Your ears tell you whether the designers got it right.
